Age Play Thoughts
What is it?
As in all alternate relationships, there is no set way for a dynamic to be used. Age play can vary from anything to the sweet, innocent, pure, and naive young girl being corrupted by the big bad man to the 8-year-old exploring with her "Daddy". Some see themselves through the eyes of the inner child, and others think they never really grew up. Perhaps it's merely a way to experience or relive childhood with all the 'advantages' of being an adult.
Often, it involves sex, but not always. It can be similar to the relationship between a mentor and student, or a loving parent and child, or just a protective friend.
In the end, the key is personal growth, and with an age play dynamic the 'child' gets to experience the affection and unconditional love throughout any discipline or training.

Why not?
Just as there is no set way to do it, there's no set reason it's done. A nature vs. nurture argument would only send the participants running in circles.
In youth, some found themselves desperate to hurry and grow up, and because of this, they never experienced a true childhood. Others, perhaps, grew up in unbalanced homes where they never knew what it was like to have unconditional love. Maybe some just miss the days without cares and responsibility. And others may just miss being loved, protected, and/or disciplined.
When age play gets tied into the BDSM lifestyle, even more reasons are added. Age play can provided a comfort zone for the bottom or submissive. It offers a security that no matter what they may do wrong, they are still cherished for who they are. This does not mean that submissives do not have this in their relationships. It's an extra security.
It can also shorten the distance between the Dominant and submissive. The Dom may feel it necessary to hold firm in their position and take the control they possess quite seriously - as they normally should. However, by doing so it is possible to be too firm, too controlling, and it is a possibility that the affection between the Dom and the sub could be lost in the control. By switching to Daddy (or Mommy) mode in bed or after disciple, for instance, it creates an easy method for reestablishing love, affection, and all those other lovey dovey emotions.
